The show was a juggernaut of a hit that changed appointment television. It’s no surprise, then, that seven years after it wrapped, Scandal continues to be talked about.
But the series will probably be remembered more for its camp than its scheming, especially in light of how it revitalized live tweeting and made appointment TV cool again. Scandal is a political thriller that revolves around Olivia Pope and her team of “gladiators in suits.” Their jobs involve fixing problems for DC’s elite, but often times they find themselves in morally ambiguous situations within those halls of power themselves. Washington’s portrayal of a deeply caring, yet strong-willed fixer brought the series to national prominence and made her one of the most popular actresses on television.
The drama also starred Joshua Malina as Attorney General David Rosen, who frequently acted as the moral compass for the show’s protagonist. After Scandal, he’s kept busy with guest-starring roles on shows like This Is Us, American Auto, and The Rookie, as well as the movie Inventing Anna.
Scandal co-creator and writer Shonda Rhimes has already announced a new Scandal spinoff focusing on B613, the covert government agency headed by Cyrus Beene, that she says will be more “factually based.” As for the show’s stars, Kerry Washington has since been seen on Broadway in The Life and Time of Harvey Milk as well as guest starring on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Bellamy Young, meanwhile, recently starred in the Netflix film Prodigal Son and has several upcoming projects in the works.
